Workshops!

Workshops are open to current students of Sangrok, with the exception of Introduction to Self Defence which is also open to family and friends of students. They are provided to support a student’s training by concentrating on specific areas that are not normally covered as part of the year-long curriculum. All workshops (unless specifically mentioned) are conducted at our Mitchell Studio.

Our workshops follow a similar structure throughout a term:

  • Grading Preparation (usually scheduled 2 weeks prior to grading).
  • Introduction to Sparring Workshop
  • Self Defence Workshop
  • Intermediate Workshops (including Self Defence) commence from Term 4.

Registration is crucial as workshops have limited places. This is to ensure an appropriate level of instruction.

Introduction to Self Defence / Honshinsul
Ages 13+
Limited 16 students
Instructor: Tripharn Teki

The Self Defence workshop is introductory, and focuses on the practical application of Taekwondo in a self-defence scenario. It will highlight the application of blocks, strikes and poomsae from a self-defence, non-competition, perspective. In the two-hour session we will discuss the science of generating power, practice how blocking and striking techniques can be used in self defence, followed by the practical application of poomsae. Fundamentally, this workshop will introduce students to interpreting the application of poomsae for themselves, rather than providing set interpretations by the instructor(s). It is limited to students aged 14+ (please discuss with Tripharn if you have someone younger who you believe is suitable) due to an increasing focus on real life scenarios, combined with increasing level of resistance from the threat (1v1 partner work). This is often not suitable for younger students. This workshop is open to family and friends of students aged 14+, and no experience is necessary.

Intermediate Self Defence / Hoshinsul
Ages 13+
Limited 16 students
Instructor: Tripharn Teki

This workshop follows on from the Introduction to Self Defence workshop and continues to provide the student with additional depth in understanding the practical application of Taekwondo in a self-defence scenario. It will briefly cover the content provided during the introductory workshop, before moving on to different poomsae application – focusing on higher level patterns, with a greater level of threat resistance (1v1 partner work) and increasing realism. In addition, there will be an increased focus on stances used in Taekwondo and its practicality within self defence, followed by a discussion on positives and negatives of Taekwondo from a self defence perspective. Due to the increasing level of resistance and real life scenario above the introductory workshop, this workshop is limited to students aged 14+ and is only open to current students.

Grading Preparation Workshop
All ages
Limited 20 students
Instructor: TBA

The Junior Workshop is aimed at White – Yellow belt (or white to blue for juniors) and focuses on the fundamental components of taekwondo. It is specifically timed to be 2 weeks prior to grading, and is recommended for those who may be attending their first grading or wish to work on specific areas prior to grading. In the two-hours the focus will be on basic blocks, strikes and early poomsae necessary for grading.

Introduction to Sparring / Gyeorugi
All ages
Limited to 20 students. Mouthguard is mandatory.
Instructor: Darien Liu

The Introduction to Sparring workshop is aimed at students who have not been involved in sparring and are interested in participating in a safe and controlled environment. This workshop is open to all ages and skill levels, however, it is particularly important for those students who are heading for higher level belts (Blue and above) to gain experience. During the two-hour workshop students will be exposed to the protective equipment, will participate in a number of drills and finish with semi-contact sparring (below the head). As part of the workshop all equipment will be provided, however, students must provide their own mouthguard.
